Vista Home Premium Won't Play DVDs

I get the following error message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with
digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try
installing an updated driver for your video card"

My video drivers are up to date according to Windows update (ATI Radeon
Express 200M). Is this a decoder problem? I thought VHP came with a built
in decoder???

If I need a decoder, which should I get?

Any suggestions, please?

EB

It does.

>If I need a decoder, which should I get?

I think it may be a problem with the type of connection to your
monitor - I've had this in XP too (as yet unsolved).

It surfaced when I changed my monitor from a 17" 1280x1024 to a 17"
widescreen 1440x900. Is there any chance you've either swapped
monitors since installing Vista, or changed from VGA to DVI / HDMI
connectors to the monitor from some other connector ?

Re: Vista Home Premium Won't Play DVDs

It's an upgrade installation on a laptop (sorry, I should have been more
specific in my original post). I used Power DVD when XP was installed , but
when I tried to play a DVD there was a program incompatibility message
relating to Power DVD. On the understanding that Vista HP had a decoder, I
removed Power DVD, and I get the error message (in both WMP and MC)...

Re: Vista Home Premium Won't Play DVDs

Hmm, to check it's actually using the Vista decoder : When you install
DecCheck and run that, is the default decoder listed as Microsoft
MPEG-2 video decoder (file name msmpedgv2dec.dll) ?

Re: Vista Home Premium Won't Play DVDs

Thanks for this; I downloaded the diagnostic tool and it tells me that I have
msmpeg2vdec.dll, but flags it as incompatible with MP10, an I cannot "set it
as preferred"; there's an error message appears telling me to log on as an
admistrator. If I do that, it makes no difference and I get the "log on as
adminstrator" dialogue. I've re-installed power DVD 5 and that works okay;
but it's a bit disappointing what with Vista being sold as particulaly
designed for media applications?

Re: Vista Home Premium Won't Play DVDs

DecCheck doesn't know anything at all about new decoders. Ignore it and
generally don't use it for Vista. After all, if you're going to be using
DVD in WMP on Vista, I believe you would specifically need to use the
Microsoft DVD decoder, which means that rest of the comparisons might not be
interesting.

You could potentially **run* DecCheck** as an administrator, which is
probably what it wants.

Re: Vista Home Premium Won't Play DVDs

OK but that should be showing as MCE compatible (but maybe not WMP10
compatible). If instead of WMP you use MCE, the DVDs should play OK
yes ? It's just WMP having the problem ?

Re: Vista Home Premium Won't Play DVDs

You're absolutely right, it does say MCE compatible, but I get a similar
error message (i.e. "copy protection") when I try to play DVD in both MP11
and MC...
