WMP

Hello.

I have 2 machines, both XPsp3, one has IE6 & WMP10 and one has IE7 & WMP12.

When I try to play media at a link such as the one below:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...edia-player-12

I have the same problem on both machines. When the page loads, it looks
like it's ready to play (displays "ready" above the seek slider), but
when I click on the play button, it flashes "connecting" real quick, but
then goes back to just displaying "Ready" and never plays. This happens
on multiple sites.

I get no error messages. Any suggestions? Thanks.

That would be media player 11 on XP
WMP12 is only available on Windows 7.

Right-click the link and try saving the file to your local disk, thenm
try playing it from there. Any change ?

The file uses WM VC-1 codec which should be included in WMP11 but not
in WMP10. However, it's automatically downloaded when needed from the
microsoft codec download servers.

So to check - in WMP, go to Now Playing dropdown menu, choose "More
Options", Player tab then make sure "Download codecs automatically" is
checked.

When I try to do that at the link above in FF, it gives me a message
"The download cannot be saved because an unknown error occurred. Please
try again."

When I try to download the movie in IE from the link above, there is no
option to do so.

Thanks for your helpful reply, Neil. WMP already has the option
"Download codecs automatically" checked.

Do you have any other suggestions please?

Ah, I see - I'm testing this on a windows 2000 box without the media
player plugin, so I'm seeing something different to you (a jpeg image
with a download link)

The direct download link is to
http://res1.windows.microsoft.com/re...9caf240ab5.wmv

You should be able to copy that text (care for line-breaks, this
should all be on a single line)

Then press CTRL + U in media player to open the internet address, and
paste it into there. It should then play.

In general, you should have the Port 25 plugin for firefox 3.5.5 :
http://port25.technet.com/pages/wind...-download.aspx

That should help with playback as you're probably on the old WMP6.4
(NSPlay) plugin if you have never installed the port 25 one.

Hi Neil. Thanks again for your help!

Here is the message I get when I hit ctrl+U in the player and put in
your link:
Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play,
burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a
file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted.

I have installed the port25 one before I think, because when I ran the
installer you had me download, it asked if I want to repair or remove
it. I still can't get it to play in firefox.

What should I try next?

Re: WMP

Is there anyone who can help me with this? Is there a way to try to
repair WMP, or a way to reinstall the plugin for browsers, or anything I
can try please? I really need to try to fix this problem. Thank you!

Re: WMP

Given that UI, remove the plug-in and then install it again. What's your
state then?

Hi zach, thanks for your reply. I have IE6 and I looked under manage
add-ons and I do not see the plugin for WMP listed in there. How do I
install it?

OK, apparently I misread your post that was spread out across several
responses.

What's a restatement of your problem?

I have 2 machines, both XPsp3, one has IE6 & WMP10 and one has IE7 & WMP11.

If I right-click the player plugin in the browser, and click error
details, I get the following verbiage:

"Windows Media player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play,
burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a
file that has been moved, renamed or deleted."
