WMP Freezes PC on wmv streams

Hello,
Im currently worling on a friends pc that rremoved XPSP2 b/c they read it
was spyware.....

That said, Ive reinstalled service pack2 IE7 and had installed wmp11 and ran
av sw
scans.

however when I attempt to view a stream on video.msn.com or any random
trailer thats a wmv, the status area of wmp say connecting to media or
locating and the pc pretty well comes to a halt(ie. mouse movement is allowed
every 10-12 seconds and even then i cant interact with a browser) to stop the
problem i can hard reset or sometimes i can get a task manager open but the
processes all look normal(ie. system idle sitting at 97-99% although
processor says 100%) but i can barely interact with the task manager best bet
is to log off user and walk away.

Ive attempted the following:
-stepped back from wmp 11 to 9
-Disabled udp from protocols in wmp(multicast,TCP,HTTP still checked)
-disabled windows firewall

can anyone provide me with any insight? could this be a codec issue. the
user had limewire installed but im not sure if it adds anything to codecs.

thanks in advance
DrewG

I just wanted to note that this occurs wheter the wmv is local or over the
network. the pc plays avi files as well so he may have done some codec work.
is there a way to reset these?

RE: WMP Freezes PC on wmv streams

I feel your pain on this one. I have tried to download LOTS of codecs, done
all the basic PC trouble shooting, etc. Paid 3 different experts a total of
$250(one of the experts is a Microsoft MVP and has a reasonably well known
media website), and I still am in the same place. Everything else on the
computer seems to run fine.

I do have a NVIDIA 6200 grahpics card and I still wonder if that hosed
things up somehow (yes, I have tried the latest drivers). Yes, I have used
gspot and many other utilities. It is not just Windows media player either.
These video files cause other players to spike to 100% CPU almost immediately.

I have been working hard on this for 2 weeks. Worked minor on it for 2 weeks
before that.

Please tell what you have tried or ask me various things I have tried.

I am running win xp, 1GB RAM, Pentium 4

Re: WMP Freezes PC on wmv streams

Downloading lots of codecs is a flat-out bad idea, since codecs are
specifically tied to specific content encodings and are NOT generally useful
items.

Does it happen when video first shows up or earlier? If it's when video
shows up, does turning video hardware acceleration all the way down help?
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#vdriver
may help.

Re: WMP Freezes PC on wmv streams

Yes, I figured that turning hardware acceleration off does indeed do the
trick. Messes up gaming however until you turn hardware acceleration on again.

Looking into some motherboard BIOS updates that may solve this.

Thanks for the reponse you gave!

Re: WMP Freezes PC on wmv streams

This would more likely to be fixed by a video card driver update as opposed
to a BIOS update. Good to hear it's kind of working again. =\
