| WMP 11, UPnP, DLNA... ??? I have a bunch of computers; MCE, XP Home, XP Pro, Macintosh, a NAS running a UpnP server, a UPnP audio device, a Viiv server, etc. and have some questions: Seems like I am reading that WMP 11 replaced WMC, is this really UPnP compliant? a guy at the MS boot at CES seemed to indicate yes but was sketchy on details and had many caveots. Should WMP 11 see my Viiv server? Can WMP be both a client AND server on XP? I was told yes on Vista but got puzzled look when asking about on XP. - Can I share media from one XP machine and go to another XP machine both running WMP 11 and see the shared content in the "client" WMP? there does not seem to be any menu for browsing to see other computers or things such as Viiv server or a NAS running UPnP. Do the new hardware devices from companies like D-Link & Netgear see the shared items from WMP 11? nobody at CES was really clear about that. Any software available that uses a "remote control" TV like interface that will see WMP or UPnP "served" content? I picked up a demo copy of the new version of Nero and it has a nice interface but it is a little funky when accessing content over the network - it needs to "collect" media or run something called Nero Scout which I have not figured out yet. So many cool products that don't work cool together quite yet! I wish there was a Media User Group in the Chicago area!! |

WMP11 seems to have broken upnp media sharing, which used to work with WMP10 and Windows Media Connect 2. Moreover, other Windows based media servers have stopped working. I have an Acer 3705 MGW TV with a built in media gateway which is now useless. I tried to revert to WMP10 and WMC2, but it did not work. I tried to diagnose with Cidero Media Controller, looks like WMP does not authorise my devices, despite a correct configuration. I tested with no firewalls, and my router supports upnp. That's one of the most dirty MS update I have experienced, these guys have no sense of QA, they dump half baked updates and let us debug. They should open a web site where we could bill them for our wasted time ! -- email: http://viadresse.com/?15121940 |

| Re: WMP 11, UPnP, DLNA... ??? To be fair, I wouldn't call the update dirty or lacking in QA but they really missed the boat on this. The guy I spoke with at CES said the questions I was asking were beyond what normal users get into - I think they tried to over simplify it and as a result lost some "touch and feel" - if it isn't working, it is hard to tell why - there isn't a lot of dialog. Also, I spent a good deal of time this afternoon playing with three computers running 11 and I can not get a single one to connect to another as a client which contradicts what they told me at CES. I think it may work on Vista machines but could not see it there because I think the machines were locked down and the dude I was speaking with didn't know the admin pass and couldn't get it working or he was just wrong about one computer being able to be a client to another or did not understand the question. I am able to get my SMC audio thing to log in to several WMP 11's and pull audio though so keep trying with your Acer device. | Re: WMP 11, UPnP, DLNA... ??? Thanks Zach, too bad it is not in XP. Do you know if in Vista WMP can be a client to a Viiv server and other forms of UPnP / DLNA NAS and the sort?? | Re: WMP 11, UPnP, DLNA... ??? Maybe your devices require album art of 175x175. Microsoft continues to provide compatibility with devices who require miniscule album art and I am sure they'll restrict the album art for all WMP users to 175x175 if this is the case. Compatibility with older devices is the single most important issue with the Windows Media Player product team other than simplification of the user interface. What's that, you say? Your device doesn't care about album art and especially its size? I must be mistaken then. Compatibility with older devices must not really matter one single twit to the Microsoft Windows Media Player product team. I must have been misled. Intel tools (http://www.intel.com/cd/ids/develope...upnp/index.htm) are an example. If you are a developer source code is available. |
