WMP 11 install adds system beep that supercedes sounds control pan

Since installing WMP11, I have noticed a profoundly annoying system beep that
activates at many common UI instances, including while opening "save changes
before close program" dialog boxes, or while adjusting the master volume in
windows volume control. The beep sounds like one from a piezo, and does not
respond to changes in the sounds and audio devices properties control panel.
Seeing as how I cannot uninstall WMP11, what can I do about this?
