Watch out for Media Player 11 - It's Awful!!!

They slip it in on you by surprise by making it look like a simple update to
MP 10.

Then you get this horrible Player that is a big pain to use.

For some stupid reason they have made it more difficult to simply play an
album or a song.

You used to be able to scroll down to the album you wanted using a simple
standard menu system. Now you have to scroll through 2 controls.

What is the reason for making it more difficult to use? This doesn't make
sense.

Re: Watch out for Media Player 11 - It's Awful!!!

You know, there's nothing wrong with having to learn a new way to do old
things. Windows Vista is an example of that. They didn't lock themselves
into supporting how we were used to doing things and, as a result, they have
made some great improvements in usability. Of course, for some of us who
have been using Windows since version 1 have a greater learning curve than
even new users because we're old and set in our ways.

WMP 11 could fit into the same category: new ways of doing things without
being held back by supporting the old ways. There's just one difference.
The new ways in Vista, while being different, are not improvements. They're
just plain unintuitive and a pain in the butt. This is not the rantings of
a 51 year old man who just can't change with the times. I like Vista from a
usability standpoint - for the most part.

In fact, in some ways, I think Vista was not change enough; I'd love to see
a new OS created to take advantage of all the latest hardware without any
consideration to "backwards compatibility" at all. Maybe this was the
approach the WMP 11 product team was taking: a new way to do things without
being hindered by trying to support the old way. The only problem is, the
new ways in WMP just plain don't work for too many users. When they changed
how we do things, they should have changed for the better instead of simply
making it either harder or impossible.

The bottom line is that you're going to purchase WMP 11 anyway. They don't
have to make it work. 70 million users will buy it next year as part of
their purchase of Windows Vista. Another 70 million will probably download
it as an "upgrade" to WMP 10. Since you do not have the option to not
purchase WMP 11 unless you live in the EU, they do not have to make it
something you would actually choose to buy. That's why they put more
developer emphasis in the online stores than they did in functionality,
reliability, and usability.

Re: Watch out for Media Player 11 - It's Awful!!!

In the second paragraph, make that one difference read: "The new ways in WMP
11" instead of "The new ways in Vista." The new ways in Vista actually are
improvements. The new ways in WMP 11 are not.

Sorry you don't like it, personally -- I think it's great, the best version
so far

Re: Watch out for Media Player 11 - It's Awful!!!

Some of the buttons are prettier, but it is more difficult to use. You have
to do more scrolling, mouse movement and clicking to play an album.

I'd give up a pretty button for easier use.

Better yet - how about pretty buttons that are easy to use?

Also, what's the idea of printing a big A, B C etc to show the first letter
of the album name? What a waste of screen real esatate that just makes it
take longer to do everything.

Well, fortunately for you there are a variety of choices in media players
out there for you to look at, you'll find one eventually -- apparently, it's
not WMP -- good luck!

Re: Watch out for Media Player 11 - It's Awful!!!

Your attitude implies that users who don't like WMP - a product Microsoft
forces them to purchase whether they want to or not - should not complain
about the quality. They should just keep their mouths shut and use
something else and be good little corporate citizens. That is exactly why
WMP is in the shape it is in. When people presented bad ideas, no one was
willing to stand up and say, "That's just bad."

It's also exactly why the European Commisson forced Microsoft to 'unbind'
Windows Media Player from Microsoft Operating Systems. In the European
Union, when you buy a Microsoft Operating System, Windows Media Player is
not part of it.

Re: Watch out for Media Player 11 - It's Awful!!!

But I thought WMP was an integral part of the operating system and Windows
won't run without it.

There must be some unidentified electro-magnetic force in the atmosphere in
the EU that lets Windows run without WMP.

Um... no... I just happen to like the product (I've tried a lot of them).
You don't. Move on to something you do like.

Re: Watch out for Media Player 11 - It's Awful!!!

That statement is Nonsense (r).

You can opt to purchase "Windows XP N" with reduced media
functionality, if you prefer. Most people given the choice would have
as much functionality enabled as possible given the pricing is
identical. Hence windows N sells virtually no copies, and is just a
marketing exercise to keep the EU happy.

How so? Nevermind, don't bother responding to that question - nobody cares.

Anyway, if you, or the other poster don't want to Google for additional info
on the Euro Version of Windows, then here's a link to Microsoft's website
concerning it:
