Windows Media player will not play streaming media in IE6

Hi everyone and thanks in advance for any help.

I have been working on this problem for a customer. He started having the
problem with WMP 10 and I had him upgrade to WMP 11 to no avail. Whenever he
goes to a website and tries to listen to a file windows media player will
open then will say "Windows Media Player cannot find the file. if you are
trying to play, burn... etc." Whenever he tries to play a video it tells him
something to the effect that he is not connected to the internet. He has DSL
and is always connected. We have gone in and checked all the file types are
selected to be played by WMP 11. We also checked the network settings and
told it not to use a proxy still didn't work. If anyone can help us with
this I would appreciate it very much.

Joe

Have you fixed it yet? Any ideas?

TIA

If "Work Offline" is checked in the File menu, that would be one way
to reproduce this. Press Ctrl+M to turn on the old-style menus, or
that option is the same one in internet explorer, you can turn it on
in the IE File menu instead.

If the links are mms:// links, WMP11 no longer supports them -
although theyu should have worked in WMP10 (probably)

A diagnostic test would rely on knowing this mystery website URL
though, which you haven't provided !

Re: Windows Media player will not play streaming media in IE6

Neil,

Looking over your response, I'm still unable to get my WMP to play
streaming...
I just updated my IE to IE7 to see if that would fix it to no avail...
I am having my problem when I go to this website www.kxam.com and click
on the "LISTEN LIVE" button. Typically it would broadcast out of WMP, but
since I upgraded to WMP 11 I get the same error message that Joe at Kemco
was getting....

Any thoughts?

Yeah, same thing - the link goes to mms://win2k.dcsinter.net/KXAM3

If you change it to rtsp://win2k.dcsinter.net/KXAM3 and use File ->
Open URL in media player with that URL - does it work then ?

Re: Windows Media player will not play streaming media in IE6

Neil,

Thanks! that helped... but I have one more question (since you seem to know
what you're talking about and I... well let's just say I don't...)

How do I make it so that the rtsp://win2k.dcsinter.net/KXAM3 link is the one
it opens each time when I go their site?

Re: Windows Media player will not play streaming media in IE6

You would have to contact the site webmaster, insist they install
WMP11 on their test box (so they can verify the problem you're having,
which they will be able to do once WMP11 is installed).

Then they'll have to modify their web page to avoid using the old,
deprecated mms protocol ;-)

For you, you could simply add that corrected Now Playing URL to a
Playlist in media player, so you don't have to use their website URL
at all.
