Is WMP "smart" enough to know that I already have a song or album in my
Library and give me some indication so that I don't purchase the music again
online? Or do I need to check manually. For example, if I have a song by an
artist and attempt to purchase the same song, but it's a "re-make" by
different artist, will anything catch that?

No, nothing would know. I can show you four different copies of "The Best
of the Art of Noise" album, for example, that have four different versions
of the same song. The player decides to let you be in the driver seat
rather than try to guess.
