There are 3 types of content broadly labelled as MPEG : MPEG-1 (video
CD), MPEG-2 (DVD video typically) and MPEG-4 + variants like DivX/XVid

If the file name ends in .avi then you're probably missing the DivX
codec for playback : http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/

If it ends in .mp4 or .m4v then you would normally benefit from
FFDShow for playback : http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

MPEG-2 video would need a DVD decoder, since you say you can view
those and presumably view DVD disks, that shouldn't be an issue here.

Re: Windows Media Player 11

Would you please let me know how did you fix this because I have the same
problem. I can not watch mpg movies (it is only.mpg) thru Windows Media
Player 11. I received this message:You've encountered error message C00D1199
while using Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player cannot play the file.

Thanks, Merita

Re: Windows Media Player 11

He's gone - I did ask if he'd post what he did to fix that.

Did you try the suggestions in my first reply to his message yet ?

Re: Windows Media Player 11

Thanks, Neil. I greatly appreciate your quick response. I checked
I opened the site that you suggested bur there are a lot of FFDSHOW MPEG-4
decoders. I don't know which one I should download. Do you think that this
will work for the files with the extension.mpg?

Re: Windows Media Player 11

I think you're missing it : The link on this page
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm
which is labelled "Download FFDShow MPEG-4" in dark blue text
