| Re: windows media player won't open videos Please post a single web page address where this is reproducible. I don't have time to search the site for whicever videos page you're seeing, and in any case there are likely to be too many differently formatted videos there for me to check each one to see if it's the one(s) you're having trouble with ! | Re: windows media player won't open videos It doesn't play here, either, although it uses standard WMA and WMV codecs. If you go to the player and do File ->Open URL with this link http://media-virginmedia-movies.mymo...2836/wm/bb.asf Does it play then ? There seems to be nothing wrong with the stream, and everything wrong with the web page used to deliver the stream you've linked below. It makes a request like this : /player/asx/asx_output.asp?url=/film/fid5062/trailers/trid2836/wm/high.asx&filmid=5062&partner=virgin However that returns a HTML (web page) and the player is expecting either movie data, or a playlist - it gets neither and cannot interpret the result designed for a web browser (since it's not a web browser, it's a media player !) | Re: windows media player won't open videos Those links that Neil sent - the video finally worked. But if I play my own video that I created for WMP - it is no longer working. Since the WMP 11 updated recently, I'm not able to play ANY of the videos on the player. Only time it worked were the two links that Neil sent. I've taken the laptop back to the store to help me get it back. No luck. All of the 'steps' on Microsoft's web site- NO LUCK there either. I wish I could go back to the WMP 10 (can't as I'm using the VISTA). Any suggestion!? | Re: windows media player won't open videos Hi Neil. I created the videa using the CyberLink Powerproducer. The videos that I have on my web site always have worked TILL the Window Media Player was updated. It quit functioning altogether I would say in the middle of October or so. No longer able to play ANY video - it would keep telling me it may not be on the server, etc. I've already checked the error code online (at MS web site). All of the steps they said to do - i've already done those. Cannot uninstall the Windows Media Player 11 (beta) as there isn't any Versioin 10 available for me to download into the Vista. The Windows Media Player is fine on the MAIN computer - but no longer working on the laptop. Can't even play DVD with Windows Media Player too (it would just quit). | Re: windows media player won't open videos It's sad that this is happening to others too. Since I'm deaf - it's really tough trying to get video to work when I depend on "visual" than the "sound" of the web site. I received an e-mail from someone I know yesterday - she recently purchased a new web cam and made a wmv video. I opened that without ANY PROBLEM. So figuring that perhaps her video was "newer" than any of the ones I have made and viewed in the past.... I created a NEW video (using Cyberlink PowerProducer). Nope - couldn't open and run my new video at all. Did check a local news website that uses WMV instead of flash - their videos are coming through just fine. SO clueless here!! <sigh> -- Smile and the world wonders what you''''re up to. : ) "jamzzsGA" wrote: > Sounds like the same problem I am having. | Re: windows media player won't open videos According to the Cyberlink site, that software produces DVD video: http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_3_ENU.html DVD video uses MPEG2 video format, so to play that back, WMP would need a compatible MPEG2 decoder installed. Due to licensing costs (and that WMP is effectively free) the decoder has to be purchased separately - it forms part of the cost of a standalone DVD player. Use DecCheck to see if you have DVD decoding software installed to let you play back the Cyberlink produced videos : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en As a side note, my old site may still work in parts - it's a demo of what's possible using videos supplemented with captions for HOH users www.captionkit.com I haven't maintained it for over 2 years, so there's a good chance some of it doesnt work any more. Be sure to reference the section on the main page about "turning on captions" on the bottom right panel Cheers - Neil On Fri, 9 Nov 2007 10:00:01 -0800, HDCTeri <HDCTeri@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >It's sad that this is happening to others too. > >Since I'm deaf - it's really tough trying to get video to work when I depend >on "visual" than the "sound" of the web site. > >I received an e-mail from someone I know yesterday - she recently purchased >a new web cam and made a wmv video. | Re: windows media player won't open videos Hello everyone and especially to Neil for all of his help. I've created videos with the Cyberlink PowerProducer with no problems in the past. Any OLD or NEW videos created with Cyberlink PowerProducer - I no longer can (or even preview the new videos) with the laptop. The desktop (has VISTA and Windows Media Player II) can view all of those videos and any on the internet without any problems. The reason I haven't sent the url to where the videos are -- they are videos / pictures of our new home and what we have done since we moved in. (smile) Thanks Neil for the link to the Captioning feature. I did try to download - but only got the zipped file that gave me an idea (like a template or step by step - but not really a program?). Now here's what I am stuck with. Since the middle of October when my SpyWare caught a bad virus (don't remember the name of it) - it removed THAT virus and I believe along with it some working files I need to make my dvd player, Windows Media Player and even RealPlay to play -- either play at all or running smoothly. So two choices I am stuck with. 1. Uninstall the Windows Media Player II -- download it from the Microsoft's web site - set it so it will NOT be updated automatically (this might be the problem?) OR 2. Do a system restore. (would only be able to backup any files I've created, e-mails, etc BUT not the 'BACKUP as featured by Vista to do). Any suggestions? Neil - wish there is a way i could contact you in regard to caption. We have a few VLOG on several deaf web sites that I either created/maintained or have trained someone to take over - we would LOVE to put caption on there. Funny thing -- the caption would be for the HEARING people - not the deaf/hard of hearing. LOL Thanks. Teri-Lyn -- Smile and the world wonders what you''''''''re up to. : ) "Neil Smith [MVP Digital Media]" wrote: > According to the Cyberlink site, that software produces DVD video: > http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_3_ENU.html > > DVD video uses MPEG2 video format, so to play that back, WMP would > need a compatible MPEG2 decoder installed. Sometimes, problems with the player affect only the current user account (for example, broken library database or installed software) You might consider creating a new Vista User account, at that point WMP should go through all the setup steps, accept privacy policy and so on, and create a new library. It may not fix anythnig, but there's no harm in trying I suppose - it's a 5 minute job. If there's no change, you could use system file checker, I think it's still available in Vista. If you go to the Start menu, show all programs, accessories. Now find "command prompt" : Right-click on that, choose "Run as administrator" (rather than just clicking it) You'll get the UAC prompt where the screen greys out - OK that. Now type in sfc /scannow Press enter and wait to see if it reports any file corruption - you may actually need the vista disk at that point if it identifies missing or damaged files - that depends on how the PC was installed. >Neil - wish there is a way i could contact you in regard to caption. LOL In theory the contact form on site should still work OK. Hearing users can also benefit from captions, for example of the captions are english and their first language is not, it can help to improve understanding of spoken english (as long as the captions are accurate and reliable / verbatim ;-) HTH Cheers - Neil ------------------------------------------------ Digital Media MVP : 2004-2007 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/mvpfaqs |
