Silver surfer WMP11 questions to prevent nervous breakdown

Hi,

I'm fairly new to all this media technology. When some of my old downloaded
music on WMP9 showed a few exclamation marks, and I got a strange file on my
desktop, I googled and found several people who recommended updating. So I
did. The update turned out to be WMP11. I looked for my old music but I saw
even more exclamation marks. I could find no details of what I needed to do
to resolve the issue using the help menu. One day the music listed in my
playlist had no problems. The next, it wouldn't let me play and updating
makes it worse. I felt baffled and very old. XP allowed me to restore the
old version which had fewer exclamation marks, but I still didn't now what to
do. Error message said that there was no further information available.

So I undid the restore and returned to WMP11. I went to my online store
(MSN Music and recovered my tracks, though some continued to show exclamation
marks. Again, no helpful details. Then I found the whole lot of downloads
with pretty album covers in 'my albums' file (?) and when I copied them to my
playlist, tho error signs disappeared. I went online to the WMP page on the
KB and was advised to avoid further nonsense by copying all my downloads to a
CD.

I had a DVD drive so I inserted a DVD-RW. After all, this is a new
programme. Surely it would allow me to copy to new technology? It didn't. It
wanted an audio CD. I'd never heard of those and I couldn't find the
requirement in my two XP textbooks, so I inserted a CD-RW disc which the
textbook recomended and inserted that. WMP didn't 'see' that either. I
eventually burned my tracks using Roxio, though it insisted that my brand new
CD wasn't blank and needed to be erased.

Phoned support line and found out I need to buy a CD-R disc.

My questions are:
Why does a new programme like WMP11 not allow us to use DVDs, let alone
CD-RW?
Why are brand new CDs not blank for the purposes of copying music?
Why CD-R? Why is WMP so picky or do I need an add-on?
Why does one suddenly get exclamation marks beside one's tracks. This is MSN
music. I haven't played them much. Are we limited to 10 plays or something?

Please let me know what I need to do to enjoy music on my computer. Or is
this foftware only for the young?

thanks.

If you clicked "Web Help" on the error messages, those will take you to a
URL with more information. That URL has some valuable data embedded in it.
What is it?

Roxio can turn on Drag2Disc, which blocks WMP from being able to see
inserted CDs that it normally would be able to write to.

I'm not actually providing a solution right now, I'm asking a couple of
questions that would of value to answer. =)

What URL does Web Help take you to? It's http://something -- what is that?
That has some data that would be helpful for you to provide.

If you have Roxio, do you have their DragToDisc option installed? It sounds
like you do - that would cause this exact scenario. If you uninstall that,
does this now work?

Re: Silver surfer WMP11 questions to prevent nervous breakdown

Hi,

As noted, I saw no url in any message, so cannot be more illuminating.

I looked at my copy of Roxio Dell Creator Plus and have 'direct to disc', as
an option. When I closed the software, I got an error code OxOOa8a1d5 and
runtime error R6025. Bless.

thank you for your continued interest,

Ellen

OK: what happens if you uninstall the Direct To Disc option? Does it work
then?

Re: Silver surfer WMP11 questions to prevent nervous breakdown

Hi,

I found the courage to install the Roxio patch for Dell computers running
WMP11 and so far, so good. It removed and reinstalled another part of the
software, not that. Record Now?
