Upgrade advisor

I have an XP machine that isn't being used by anyone. I ran the Windows 7
upgrade advisor and the only thing it said was that my video card wouldn't
support the aero visual effects. Can anyone tell me if it is still OK to
try an install? Since no one uses this machine it is basically just an
experiment (I got the three user pack of Win7 so the extra user is burning a
hole in my desire to fiddle with it.)

It told me my GeForce card was incompatible so I downloaded the Windows
7 drivers just in case, but it wasn't needed and all works fine.

Sure.

Especially if it's just an experiment, why do you hesitate at
experimenting to find out?

W7 Upgrade Advisor is a very strange program. After weeks of trying to
get it to run, it finally ran. After a few hours of searching, I found
the output.

First line--OK to run W7
Second line--Hard disc controller incompatible

Hardly sounded like a recipe for success. Since I had already bought the
$50 pre-release deal I decided to try to install it, after a thorough
backup. No problem at all with the HD controller. Lots of strange
quirks, though, makes me eager for SP1.

Eh, it's just a matter of whether I want to spend 2 to 6+ hours in front of
my computer, or painting the bedroom. I probably should paint the bedroom
first. :-<

Sure, go ahead and install it. You don't have to have Aero capability to
run. I did a Win7 install on an old Asus A7V board with half a gig of
memory and an old AGP card. Install went fine and runs well except for
being really slow compared to what I'm used to. But, it was a worthwhile
experiment as well as a learning experience.

OK that's fine, but the way I read your prior message, you *wanted* to
do the experiment.

William,
It is still okay to install Windows 7 however you will not be able to experience the benefits of Windows Areo. Also,
Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here Windows 7 Category . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. Should you run into any further issues, you are welcome to seek assistance there as well.

I suppose that confirms my suspicion that Microsoft news groups are
moving to crappy web based forums
