You are out of luck re using it with a 64bit OS.. -- Mike Hall - MVP Windows Experience http://msmvps.com/blogs/mikehall/ |

| Re: Vista 64-bit error 8020 I'm using a Prolific USB to serial cable to interface with a front door call box. (A directory of residents in a multiple). This thing (the call box) isn't exactly new technology, although the box is brand new. Here's the thing...when I test the connection everything appears to be fine but when I ask the software, (Tricomm) to access the database or just communicate with the box I receive "Runtime error 8020..error reading comm device." A different laptop (not mine) running windows xp sp3 which actually has a serial port (I only have USB, hence the converter) connects and functions just fine. I downloaded the latest drivers for the converter after emailing the manufacturer but I receive the same error message. Is the problem most likely the 64 bit operating system, the converter (QVS.com model UR-2000M2), a bad serial cable (connected to the converter) or Vista itself? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. -- rjburr1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ rjburr1's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/144003.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-hardware-devices/1181205.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

| Re: Vista 64-bit error 8020 The first thing to do is to look in the Device Manager and see what COM port it's installed itself as, and then check your software to make sure it matches. The easiest way to test the device is working is by using HyperTerminal. Trouble is, it's no longer included with Vista and it's no longer free to download. You can download a 30-day trial from http://www.hilgraeve.com/hyperterminal.html which will do for diagnostic purposes, or a quick Google search for "terminal emulation software" should find you some free ones (I can't recommend any because I haven't used them). Anyway, if you have any sort of terminal emulator, set it to use the COM port that your USB adaptor is installed on, short pins 2 and 3 in the 9-way connector (long-nosed pliers should do the job, but make sure they don't also touch any other pins, or the outer edge of the connector) and anything you type should be echoed back to you. Take the short off and anything you type should not come up on the screen. If it does you either have Local Echo enabled in the emulator or there's something wrong. This is little more than a confidence check but it should help identify whether you have a faulty adaptor or not. This is only the start - you have other things to worry about like baud rate, number of data/stop bits, parity and flow control but let's go one step at a time... Don't worry though: the nature of the error message means it's most likely just not finding the device at all, which usually means means wrong COM port.
