After nearly giving up, this forum recommended a driver that Dell no
longer supports (according to their site they no longer have any vista
driver for this printer) but I finally located it, downloaded it,
unzipped it and installed it, having nothing to lose. I have two of
these printers :) and was ready to throw them away. Was I surprised.
It now works perfectly. The driver is R148368,exe, and will show as
Driver version 164.228 when installed. Thanks, Vistaheads.

Insert ink cartridges (if installing printer for the first time).
Remember to take the tabs off the cartridges before placing them in the
printer, because if you do not, you will not see anything printed.

Power on you computer system. It should recognize that new hardware has
been attached to the computer.

Insert driver disc, (or download from website using the link in the
reference section). The disc should auto play. If not, go to My
Computer, and double click the drive that the disc is in.If you download
the driver, save the file to a place on your computer (such as My
Documents or Desktop) so you can find it, because it's file name will be
something hard to recognize as a printer driver. Double click the file
once you have saved it your computer.

Since I can not see the OPs post, as your forum leaches off the Microsoft
newsgroup and if you don't copy the OPs message we, using a true newsreader,
can't see previous messages.

This printer originally shipped with Windows 2000 and XP drivers. The
installation disk that shipped does NOT have any Vista compatible drivers on
it. The OP must download the Vista 32 bit driver from
[url]http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WLH&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=PRN_INKJET_720&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=[/url].
If the OP is using a 64 bit version of Vista, the printer may not work with
it as there are no Dell supplied drivers available online. The Vista 64 bit
"add Printers" setup may have drivers but since I do not use Vista 64 bit I
do not know.
