| Re: upgrade to 64 bit Hi, I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to computers etc. This thread has been of help to me. My only question is how can you tell if your computer is running the 32 bit or 64 bit. I've tried to explore my laptop but I'm a bit scared to go to far in incase I mess something up. Cheers. |

| RE: upgrade to 64 bit I am also running 32 bit Vista and want to upgrade. I already tried to, but when I tried putting the upgrade in, it says Offer Not Found. And yes, my computer is 64 bit capable. My copy of Vista came with the laptop. |

| Re: upgrade to 64 bit The reason you saw "Offer not found" is that you are using an OEM product key. Only retail copies of Vista entitle the user to order the alternate media. If you go back to the website and read the text again you will see the references to "retail." You can migrate to x64 Vista by purchasing a retail upgrade edition of Vista. Ultimate comes with both dvds. The other editions come with only the x86 dvd but the upgrade edition product key will entitle you to order the x64 dvd from the Alternate Media website. You will have to boot with the x64 dvd and perform a custom install, meaning you will have to reinstall your files, settings, and apps after the migration. | Re: upgrade to 64 bit I have a quad core processor in my desktop and home premium 32 bit on it. I looked at the architecture for the processor to make sure that it was 64 bit capable and it ws x86 instead of x64. according to microsoft's site, x64 is required to run 64 bit Vista. But intel says that all of the quad cores can run 64 bit OEMs. Which is right? "Colin Barnhorst" wrote: > It is a Core Duo, meaning that it is a 32bit cpu. It cannot run x64. Don't worry though, all of the quad-cores are fully 64 bit capable, as are the Core 2 Duos. -- Jane, not plain ;) 64 bit enabled :-) Batteries not included. | Re: upgrade to 64 bit If a free upgrade is available (and it almost certainly is not available) it would have to come from ASUS. And even if one is available you cannot upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit, you would have to wipe the system clean and start all over again to install the 64-bit version. -- Richard G. | RE: upgrade to 64 bit Why would you have any desire to run 64 bit version, did you find some hidden source of programs or what. The vast majority of programers will continue to solely use 32 bit version. Money makes programers happy. Now if you really want 64 bit then why don't you talk to Apple. Stop wasting time with chasing 64 bit. -- BABB "guitardude" wrote: > Hi, I am currently running 32 bit Vista Home Premium, but I am considering > upgrading to Vista Ultimate and the 64 bit version if I can. | RE: upgrade to 64 bit MS has a setup program that will test your system to see if it is capable of running the 64 bit. Good luck not very many hardware producers actually have software updates to support the 64. -- BABB "guitardude" wrote: > Hi, I am currently running 32 bit Vista Home Premium, but I am considering > upgrading to Vista Ultimate and the 64 bit version if I can. | Re: upgrade to 64 bit i have a amd phenom quadcore cpu. will that work with 64 bit vista because i bought vista a while ago and it keeps freezing during instalation. it is not an upgrade. it is a newly built pc and i am putting a full version of vista on it from nothing. what else could the problem be? |

| Re: upgrade to 64 bit Most likely you have a device that causes the freezeup. Also phenom cpu's have not so good marriage with Vista 64 bit. To help I need to know specifics like before installing 64 was your HD cmpletely clean. If you have a full version of 64 was the install disk completely clean ? If it's an older version of 64 it could have very few drivers. Vista is a hungry OS. Best bet if you have someone who has an intel 64 capable I's have them test the disk. 1. Completely clean HD 2. Install disk is it clean, no smodges, scratches or such. The 64 version is very fussy if the above are not clean it will lock up. 3. Do you have any other OS's, like windows XP or such, if so load it you may have a processor problem. 4. Did you know that an intel Q6600 cpu does circles around the AMD, no AMD can compare to it. The CPU can run anything. If this helps great. But welcome to the extremely fussy OS called Vista. -- BABB "shane" wrote: > > i have a amd phenom quadcore cpu. will that work with 64 bit vista because i > bought vista a while ago and it keeps freezing during instalation. it is not > an upgrade. it is a newly built pc and i am putting a full version of vista > on it from nothing. what else could the problem be? |

| RE: upgrade to 64 bit All good advice here, but just because you can doesn't necessarily mean you should. Check out your applications first - There are some that haven't been written for 64 bit. (Regedit, ZoneLabs firewall to name but two). Of course they may be OK now - I lost faith with them and found other solutions when they weren't going to work with 64 bit and haven't checked back.
