| Transferring data & programs from old hard drive The motherboasrd on my old computer went out, and the computer wouldn't even turn on. I salvaged the old hard drive, though. How do I get some of the old files/programs out of that old drive? I tried hooking it up through my external backup drive, but nothing comes up. Do I have to change/remove the jumpers in the old drive to make it a "slave"? Any other suggestions? Thanks |

| Re: Transferring data & programs from old hard drive Yes you have to change the jumpers to slave (Pata Drive)......... You can then transfer your work files..........but you will not be able to tranfer programs. They will need to be reinstalled peter -- DISCLAIMER: If you find a posting or message from me offensive, inappropriate, or disruptive, please ignore it. | Re: Transferring data & programs from old hard drive I changed the jumpers as indicated on the drive to "slave" but the computer still does not seem to recognize the old hard drive. (ATA vs SATA issue?) I installed it in my external drive case (so that I could just use the USB connection), but it just seems to get locked up trying to do something, as indicated by the red light on the case, which usually means it is transferring or reading files. Thanks for any suggestions. | Re: Transferring data & programs from old hard drive well........you never did state if the drive in question was Pata or Sata ?????????? Check under Control Panel/admin tool/comp management/disc management and see if/what its listed (at) You might need to take possession peter -- DISCLAIMER: If you find a posting or message from me offensive, inappropriate, or disruptive, please ignore it.
