mini sd support for windows vista?

I recently bought a laptop with vista pre-installed, and when I tried to use
my 2 gig mini sd card with my new laptop I was prompted to format. Now my 2
gig mini card, which worked great for 6 months prior to this, shows only
956mb of available memory and I can't reformat back to 2 gigs on either
vista, xp, or my phone. Why did this happen and how do I fix it?
