erratic mouse behavior: acts like shift button is pushed

weird intermittent behavior... mouse acts like the shift button is pushed:
so..it sletects text in docs and in IE7, without clicking anything,
rolling the wheel flips the web page to next or previous page...

sometimes i can push escape and all is well, other times i need to reboot

i have a plain vanilla logitech usb (with adapter for PS2) mouse plugged
into the PS2 port on my Dell docking station, vista ultimate and latitude
D620.

many thanks if you have a suggestion

The first thing to do is try a different mouse, preferably one without
an adapter.
