| Vista Sleep/Hibernate crash Hello, I have a problem with my Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate. Until recently, everything was working fine, but now whenever I try to put the laptop into Sleep or Hibernate, the screen fades to black, as if it is going to sleep, but the blue power light stays on, rather than the pulsating orange that is supposed to happen. Then after a couple of seconds, the computer just stops and powers off. When I reboot, Windows tells me it wasn't shut down correctly etc. I'm all up-to-date on Windows Updates, and windows can't find a solution when I report the problem. The other day I found it started to restart when I clicked Shut down, but this only occurred when the laptop was plugged in to the mains power supply.] I'd really apreciate any help at all on this. Thanks helloworld |

| RE: Vista Sleep/Hibernate crash I'd suggest visiting the website of the manufacturer of the graphics chip in your system and downloading the latest, Vista compatible video drivers from there. Corrupt video drivers are (IME) the most likely cause for this. - John "helloworld" wrote: > > Hello, > I have a problem with my Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows Vista > Ultimate. > > Until recently, everything was working fine, but now whenever I try to > put the laptop into Sleep or Hibernate, the screen fades to black, as if > it is going to sleep, but the blue power light stays on, rather than the > pulsating orange that is supposed to happen. | RE: Vista Sleep/Hibernate crash Hi helloworld, Exactly when did this problem start? For example, did it start after Patch Tuesday (9th October), or was the problem there before? If the problem started on or after Patch Tuesday, then the most likely cause is an update that has failed to install correctly, in which case if you post the names of the updates someone should be able to help you. If you have your laptop configured to also download and install optional updates, then again provide details of these as well. Note that I do not recommend downloading and installing optional updates - these are generally for the hardware in your machine, updates for which should be obtained directly from the website of the hardware manufacturer.
OK, I'm not exactly sure when it started because I don't use the sleep function every day, and I didn't note the date when it started (silly me ). I think it was around the 28th september, so I'll list the updates from the 26th to the 28th. KB933928 KB915597 (these are definition updates for windows defender - there are quite a few of these, so this is the only one I'll list) KB933928 KB936960 KB936514 KB932080 KB934173 KB934393 KB934062 KB931906 KB934391 I'm afraid that is as far as I can narrow it down. Thank you for your help, helloworld |

| Re: Vista Sleep/Hibernate crash Hi helloworld, Thanks for the reply. Most of the updates you listed are for Office 2007, and of course a Defender update. There are 2 updates listed which might be the source of your problem - they are KB933928 and KB 931906. I suggest that you download and run the Belarc Advisor from http://www.belarc.com and check to see if your machine is completely up to date. If any updates are shown as being incorrectly installed, uninstall them from the Windows Update panel and then follow the instructions in my post 'Updating Windows Vista' in the newsgroup 'Windows Update' (dated 10/10/2007).
