How do I get dvd drive lens cleaner to work?

My drive quit reading disks and I read on here to clean the lens. While
trying this, I could not get the drive to pick up that the cleaning disk was
in the drive? Any way to get this to work? Running vista on an HP with
drive that came with the puter.

There are many different kinds of cleaning disks. It's best to read the
instructions that came with it. Barring that, you could always just open
the "Computer" window and double-click on the DVD icon (or use some
other method to get to the DVD icon). You'll likely get an error message
but if it spins the disk, it will get cleaned.

Thanks but already tried this and get the message "Please insert a disk into
drive E". I insert a disk and drive starts up, screen flashes and kicks the
disk back out with error message still up". I will try system restore and
see if this will work. Any other ideas?

I believe that as long as the disk spins a few times, the cleaning
process was done. Is your cleaning disk the type with small brushes?

It could be that your drive is defective. Before you try System Restore,
if possible, remove it and install it in another PC to see if the
problem follows the drive. Or try removing the drive from "device
manager" and let Windows find it again and reinstall the driver.
