I've just acquired a Vista based system and I'd like to add an external 56K
modem to support the auto-dialing of phone numbers via the freeware package
PhoneDeck. Any recommendations? Vista compatible drivers are obviously
essential.

Alex,

The best source for whether a modem is Vista compatible is the manufacturer
of the modem. I would say that any fully hardware based (on board controller
and digital signal processor) would be Vista compatible. However, any
software that goes with the modem, such as an automatic dialer or a FAX
application, would need to be Vista compatible.
