Constant, Random Freezes after update

My comp was runing pretty well for about 4 months and then after the latest windows update; it went to tell.

I've had to completely re-install vista home premium about 9 times now and it still freezes no matter what i do or try. Windows explorer becomes unresponsive during these freezes but Sound and Dvd's still keep playing, ctrl +alt +del does not work - says failed to produce security logon.

I've updated everything, tried using IE, no IE, have done hardware diagnostics, plays video games fine, Freezes with HDMI plugged in and unplugged.

2.4 ghz P8600 series centrino 2 core 2 duo, 3 gig ram, ATI HD 3400 , Fast hard drive. Vaio Fw laptop.

I'm guessing it's just vista home premium that is total crap, because basic and business work fine on my other comps.

Would be greatful for any insight into this problem or advice, Should i just buy vista basic and get rid of home premium?
