Problems w/ desktop/icons, start menu, and programs trouble.

Let's start with the desktop. I can no longer right click on my background and change anything. No menu comes up at all. I also cannot delete any icons. When I right click on them it reads: "open"(which won't open when i click on it), "runas"(no space), "Scan for Viruses", and "Share...". I can't move them to the recycle bin either.

Now with the start menu. When I am using the classic start menu it opens fine but it won't open vista's menu anymore. It was fine, and for some reason it just won't open at all.

Okay, when all of these problems started I had a feeling I had downloaded one too many things, so I started uninstalling unnecessary things using the programs and features menu in the control panel. When the programs were uninstalled their icons were still left on my desktop, and as stated above I couldn't do anything about it.

Please help! I'm a college student who would like to have his old computer back. Any advice would be much appreciated.
