Mitch Wagner argues the UMPC is the most disappointing product of 2006. Maybe he is right that the UMPC was overhyped. Personally, writing that the UMPC is just a Tablet PC misses the point. The UMPC is a Tablet PC and more. The "more" is what many computer enthusiasts missed during the promotions. Carrying around a Tablet PC can be annoying and I dislike carrying around a regular notebook. Yet, I want access to the Internet, to my data, and I want to be able to jot down notes while I am moving around from place to place. The strength of the UMPC (the "more") is the mobility. Journalists who do not move around very often miss this point because they do not need the strength of the UMPC. Maybe Mitch just feels like he was duped - and he was expecting something monumental. He is right on that count - Microsoft went too far and there was a backlash. The company paid the price for not being honest and trying to hide behind a marketing plan of "I have a secret." But that is all in the past and the time is right to move forward.
