A Negative
Before going further, I decided my thoughts were very negative. I enjoy Linux but choose to work in Windows Vista. I don't need a small Linux machine. Yes, Windows XP is an option but the hardware is not robust enough for Windows Vista. Windows Vista is vital to the future viability of any new mobile pc. In fact, I came to accept my negative thoughts are based on the premise the hardware being released is not forward thinking but atune to closet cleaning; How many more crappy slow processors are still in the closet?
Once I accepted the negative thoughts were keeping me down, my mind slowly opened. Several interesting trends happened this year in mobile pcs - some are noteworthy.
(1) New vendors introduced small mobile pcs this year. The more vendors releasing product provides options for the consumer. Additionally, new products reinforces the concepts.
(2) Many vendors moved away from a slate only mobile pc. Some people are convinced a keyboard is required - but it is not if Vista is the OS. Additionally, the small keyboards released on several models are too small for fast typing. Interestingly, the argument continues that a keyboard is faster than the TIP - I doubt it. If a mobile pc is used while at a desk then use a docking station.
(3) Screen sizes are getting smaller. Smaller might be nice for some people but I prefer at last a 7-inch screen.
The best news is 2008 is only a few hours away and that means CES 2008 begins in a few short days. Hopefully, we'll see Some fantastic mobile pcs being introduced.
