My high school students were struggling with learning the different types of nuclear radiation: alpha, beta, and gamma. the lecture words and phrases helped some students but the majority were lost in the language of strange words.
Digital ink and the UMPC saved the day.
The following drawing was created to help students understand alpha particles are equivalent to a Helium (He) nucleus and while one might expect alpha particles to be large and strong relative to the beta and gamma, alpha particles are stopped by paper. See if you can pick up or some of the other key concepts.

Because the drawing was completed in journal, I was able to snip a copy and place a copy of the drawing in a word document. This document was made available to the students through the class website. Another teacher shared the drawing, too. She commented hearing students repeating the phrase "Go go gamma" during the quiz. The class averages were high in all twelve classes, approximately 400 students were helped by a single drawing and UMPC.
