Part of the beauty of the HTC Shift is the SnapVue technology - being able to get to some information quickly. Of course, mobilites want more than "some" information - they want all the information available. Part of what might help the effort in getting information more portable is a Windows Vista SKU developed for UMPCs.
Sumocat started the discussion regarding a mobile version of Windows Vista and
Loren continues the dialog. I'll just add my own little twist :)
First, Intel and Microsoft need to work together and not fracture the market; that is, MID and UMPC need to become UMiD or Ultra Mobile Internet Devices. The can be achieved (with real leadership) with Intel developing faster processors and more efficient chip sets while Microsoft develops a faster OS for the mobile system. Basically, dump the egos - both companies are wrong - so knock it off.
Second, engineers need to rethink the negatives of the UMPC (battery, performance, and weight) and work through the challenges to develop the UMIDs.
There are dangers if Microsoft got the message inverted. For example, the Windows Vista Mobile OS cannot be proprietary and only run software applications designed for ViM (Vista Mobile). Additionally, ViM cannot be a degraded or stripped down OS. The beauty of mobility is taking the power with you.
The possibilities are endless. What do you think?
