Windows XP Tablet Edition and MS Access

I am having an issue with opening a MS Access 2000 database on Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, and I am wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of this and maybe a solution. The database was created in MS Access 2000 and it opens ok the first time, but Windows XP Tablet PC Edition will not terminate the process when the database is closed, preventing the database from being reopened until the process has been manually ended in Task Manager. I have tested this on normal Windows XP machines, as well as Windows 2000 machines, and I do not have the same issue. I believe if this was database specific it would happen on Windows XP Professional, and Windows 2000 Professional as well as Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, but it does not, leading me to believe that Windows XP Tablet PC Edition handles process termination differently than Windows XP Professional, or any other Windows operating system for that matter.

I haven't played with a database built with Access 2000 under XP and moved it to The TPC environment. However, I have exported excel spreadsheets on the TPC and opened and closed the newly formed databases fine.

Maybe I'll try that tonight and see what happens. It is getting late though.

You might ask Matt with Palm Beach Database and see if he has any suggestions. I pulled his name up when doing a search for Tablet PC and Database experts. Maybe he'll be glad to help and then please let us know what you discover.

Good luck.

MS Access on Tablet PC

I was having the same problem that you are ecxperiencing. This happens when I try to open it by clicking on the file name in Explorer. I have gotten around it by opening it by opening Access and opening the file trough Acess.

Also, when I try to use the writing pad, for inputting something into a field nothing happens ?

Do you have any suggestions for that ?

Thanks

Yep - this appears to be a problem with tabtip.exe and Access 2000. Closing Access with tabtip.exe running does not end the Access process so you cannot reload a database. This only seems to happen if you create a report or form. There seems to be no fix for this, but Microsoft does have a fix for Access 2002. I've resorted to upgrading to Office 2003 which works wonderfully.

Anybody come up with a fix for this yet? I am hoping to use Access 2000 with my special database(forms) on my tablet. Thanks.

I know this isn't exactly an answer you'd like but I'd recommend the upgrade to 2003 for better inking and the tablet experience and not worry about this issue with the older version.

Is there a reason maybe that you cannot upgrade? Maybe that is a better question.

Just lots of money for all the tablets I need to run this app on. All new versions of Office are pricey. Not the answer I'm looking for, but I'll probably have to byte the bullet.

Did anyone have any luck fixing this bug?

After 18 months, nobody probably cares, but I just ran into this bug for the first time today. The user is not creating a report or form or anything, just opening a data entry form in "run mode". The first time in, there is no problem. When you exit the app, the lock file goes away and everything looks fine, but when you try to go back in by double clicking on the MDB file, you can see the lock file (LDB) being created, but nothing happens - the application doesn't open. If you look in task manager, you will see that MSACCESS.EXE is running. If you end it in task manager, you can open the mdb as normal.

That was not a viable solution, so after reading this thread, I think I came up with a workaround. I created a shortcut that opens access, specifying the full Access path and full mdb path:

"c:\Program Files\MSOffice\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" x:\dbpath\mydb.mdb

That appears to have worked. The database opens and closes normally every time. I'm not sure why this would be any different than just relying on Windows to open the mdb using the registered application (access).
