Toshiba M205 Tablet HD/boot problem

Not too sure what's going on here...

I'm trying to repair a friend's Toshiba Protege M205. When i turn it on, the Toshiba and Window's logo's appear to be in 16-bit (or lower). After the XP logo, the screen goes blank. Eventually I hear the welcome music, but see nothing on the display.

When i try to boot to safe mode, or last know good configuration, DOS runs down a list of drivers...illegible jumbled text, and remains there.

I have tried to use the boot disk from an external cd drive with no luck.

Anyone have a clue what's going on???
