service pack 2 problem with dictation icon

I just downloaded the SP 2 for Windows XP for tablets onto my Compaq TC1000. Now, when I open the new input panel and hit the dictation icon, the floating dictation sensor icon never goes away. Even if I close out the input panel altogether. And if I try to restart, once this happens, I find that "explorer.exe is not responding." Can anybody help me with this? I have downloaded all recommended updates from Microsoft and the only non-original software I have loaded is OneNote. I would appreciate any guidance anyone may be able to give.
