Wow, it has almost been a year!

Since it is the same model then you should be able to move things around. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't ... so my advice is to give it a try. Hopefully it wouldn't be an expensive mistake if it fails.

Talking getting there

OK, dropped in the new harddrive and everything works, at least the basics anyway! I found this hd on ebay and it already had 98 on it.
There was no handwriting recognition but I dropped on Ritepen, seems to be ok. Penoffice was giving probs through. It's been a challenge getting anything on this machine. I had to resort to going online dialup thru the built-in modem to download drivers (after a few hours!), then hooked up wireless pcmcia for broadband; hooray for cable speed! D-link DWL G-650 works fine. Still can' t hook up an external cd/dvd or even a little sandisk thumbdrive, 98se just doesn't like 'em even though I know I've got the right drivers. USB seems to have some real issues.
Now I would like to put on at least win2kpro, maybe even XP. I would have to do it via network and another machines cd/dvd drive. Anyone see a prob with this? I just remember hearing that it didn't like os installed from another machine. Do I understand correctly that this old thing could not benefit from xp? I would be happy with win2kpro because it says on the sticker "designed for 2kpro"; I just don't want to get to the point I was several months ago. I'm just very nervous about trying to load on another os. :)

holdenoversoul,

I have been involved with old Fujitsu junk for about 3 weeks now and have read parts of this thread several times for help. As your last post was only aboput ten days ago, and your first over a year, I assume you would still like some help. If this is the case, Email me off line, my profile says its possible, and we can shoot the bull. I have a somewhat non-traditional method of OS install that i developed due to my extreme cheapness that you might benifit from.

Sid

Smile Reseting the Stylistic LT p-600

While trying to find the best way of setting up a Stylistic LT p-600 (with a new HDD with none of the Stylistic recovery stuff on it) I came across your problem.

However you get on with a complete reinstallation there something you really need to know. (And almost nobody ever seems to spot this!):

There is a small hole in the back of these machines, close to the memory compartment, which a pen or pencil (or the stylus) tip can be pocked into. Doing this WILL RESET the unit so you do not keep coming back to where you were ever time you turn thing on. (So you need not, for example, be forever stuck with a DOS prompt and no way forward.)

This a real life saver with this pesky machine design as you wont be able to do a real re-boot any other way until you have got Windows correctly installed.

I know that this information is pretty late in the day for Ben but I hope people will still find this useful.

PS Does anybody know if there was ever any sort of recovery CD for the Stylistic LT p-600? (I mean what else can you use if its a blank replacement HDD?)

Phil

This is what I've got, Fujitsu Stylistic LT P-600 with Win 98se. piii600 15gig 128ram

Ports: 1 PCMCIA
1 compact flash
1 internal modem RJ11 on Com2, Fujitsu LB Global LTModem
Infrared
1 usb

Mini-dock connection

I've tried connecting by dialup w/ internal modem, no go. Error 666 (machine of the beast) "modem not plugged in or out of service. connect a modem & try again" . Com 2 isn't listed in device mgr.

I've tried by infrared: "communication could not be initialized. Make sure ir is enabled on machine thru ir control panel applet", In control panel under ir, I get "error 45 ir software ecountered internal error. check ir device's software config under Network Properties. If external or installable, check connection, restart". All looks fine.

I put in my own modem card but of course win98 doesn't have the drivers & I can't put them on.

I put in a 10/100 network card but same deal, can't get the drivers on.

I was able to download a bunch of drivers I need onto a Sandisk 256mb cruzer mini usb flash. Wouldn't you know it doesn't need a driver unless using with win98 se! On any other machine, you just pop it into a usb.

I picked up a little usb 10/100 ethernet adapter to hopefully connect direct to another machine with a crossover cable. Darned thing needs to have driver uploaded.

I've got a usb serial adapter to hopefully connect to another machine. It plugs right into usb with a male 9pin out. It says "simple plug & play, no IRQs required, ok with win 98" I have not tried that yet mainly because I don't want to open the box only to find it as useless as Win98.

The only other thing I can think of is a pc-pc link with a Net-linq usb-usb cable. As long as I don't need to install drivers, I should be ok.

There is a serial adapter that plugs into the mini dock connection. Haven't bought it because it's straight from fujitsu and more bucks.

I looked at some usb cd-roms and floppy drives but I know they'll need drivers to load on. A friend seemed to think there were some out there that didn't need any other drivers but I haven't found then yet.

I haven't tried a mini-dock mainly because I don't have one and they're about 200 bucks, a little more than I want to spend for a chunk of plastic with a few ports & because I'm going to use an 802.11g wireless card in it anyway if I can ever get the p.o.s. right.

My goal is to dump Win98, put on Win2kpro and load on all the other software I need, network wireless for home & office.

Whaddya think? If you have any ideas or can steer me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. This machine's about as thick as a hockey puck and I've still got some ice on the drive...hmmm....tempting.

Thanks, Ben
