TC1000: memory module problems

memory module causes windows to hang: I posted this as a reply on another question allready, sorry if your'e reading this twice....

I have a TC1000 with 256Mb and another 512Mb would be great so i got me a module, but what about this.... the memory expansion module works fine.... in the tc1000's BIOS, though windows just completekly breaks up. In starting, it tells me there's a missing DLL and it cannot run. Exit Windows.... The memory module is an IBM pc133 non-parity, so it should be ok as I checked on crucial.com, it's (appearantly)tested too, so no hardware problems as far as I know..
Any ideas ANYONE? The first time I tried this with another module (different brand) and I never got the tablet to start again, I re-installed the OS completely and tried with this new IBM module... to the described effect. HP won't help me because they say it's a software problem. Which leaves me pretty desperate, actually   :censored:

thank if you're able to shed a light on this

Hey there,

Sorry to read about your troubles with the HP. However, I'm not clear on the brand and model of the memory module you are trying to add. Also, check your BIOS version.

FWIW, the BIOS will only count the memory and will not do a test.

You can change the timing in the BIOS from auto to a CL timing that is longer and see what happens.

In case you are not aware, mixing memory modules is a really bad idea. Timing issues, PCB boards, and quality of manufacturing can lead to all kinds of trouble.

Well, let us know ... and we'll see what we can do to help.

Post re: TC1000 memory problems

thx for the reply. The module is an IBM 512MB PC133 CL# 3.3V S N. There's some more numbers on it: OPT:19K4656 FRU:19K4657 and a date, 2002-05-30. Anyway, I did find out it is supposedly a compatible module. By now I have updated the BIOS and some Crusoe processor drivers from the HP site (firmware?). but I'm a bit hesitant to try the module again....

Since it is a PC133 module then some of the older motherboards would accept it. Do you have a desktop with a motherboard that you could test the module in that configuration?

Since you've updated the BIOS, go ahead and try the module and see what happens. You can always remove it. Let us know what happens.

Layne it's not a desktop PC133, it's a 144-pinSODIMM.

If you bought the module from Crucial.com, simply call tech support and ask for a replacement module.

If you bought it from another company and are just using Crucial.com as a reference, then you might want to just return that module and get the part from HP or Crucial.

The module itself could be bad (not likely if you bought it from Crucial) or it could be you have updates you need to run.

So, yes, if there are BIOS updates, run them (obviously without the new module installed).

Angry

that's right Lora, I don't think I'll be able to put into any desktop slot... Anywayz, the crucial.com was indeed used as a reference, I bought the first module (the one screwing up my windows XP, I don't know the brand anymore) at an Ebay-vendor, returned it, got a new one (!) which now is an IBM, with the same specs, put it in and it halted again. This time I could take it out, restart and it's fine. I just tried it again, AFTER updating BIOS and Crusoe-driver, and guess what.... same thing happened.

This time however i wrote down what the screen said:

please report this error as:
load needed DLLs for kernel

and before a line about windows not being able to start. It's the same line everytime, and after removing the module it's fine again..... I'm getting out of options here... keeps one busy, though ;)

Arrow Update on the memery problem

I got me docking station, so now I could try to re-install Windows... Didn't work: teh system hangs big-time during initiation of setup. So it's time I guess to go and harass the vendor... thanx for the help anywayz
