no backlight

My wifes Motion M1300 recently developed a problem of no backlight. It was inconsistently working over the past 2 days, but currently not lighting the screen. Windows is running it seems, but really can't see the display. We are on a trip and don't have a keyboard. Possible problems/solutions? Might hardware be failing, or a virus, other? Thanks, Mike

I think the Motion has an external monitor port. If so, hook up a monitor and see if there is an image.

Probably not a virus and I hesitate to say that the hardware is failing, but it certainly is possible. Have you noticed any consistancy to when it does and doesn't work? Moderate jiggling help? Don't be violent with it ;) , but it could be a lose connection although unless a ribbon wasn't secured properly, it may be a stretch. I haven't seen the insides of the Motions to see how they're layed out/ribboned but that'd be my first guess (hope?).

Try the external port to see if there's an image and you may also want to consider trying to shine some sunlight onto the face to see if you can make out anything. When you get home, if you feel comfortable with your skills, you could also open it and see if it's something obvious or if you have a warranty in tact, it might be worth it to call your vendor.

If all else fails, I'll buy it off you. ;)
