| Hi again, the initial joy of unpacking my new M400 Portege, with 2Gb of Ram soon disappeared. It started to lock up during the installation of my programs. Initially just a lock up with no indication of why. No patterns, no specific problems. Just the desktop or whatever program was running frozen on the screen. The only way to start up again was to force a shut down with the power button. The problem then got worse, any time I quickly scrolled through a pageof information the screen would 'freeze'. There would be blurry imageof the desktop withlots of vibrating rectangles of color all over the screen. I eventually began to suspect the ram. Several blue screens of death, indicated a possible RAM issue. I took it back to the shop today where they were very helpful and amazed that a "Toshiba" could be causing me any problems. Several RAM tests later they were not able to fault the ram on board, BUT the problem was repeatable and continued to freeze the system. THey then removed one of the ram sticks and the problem was still there. They now think it is the chipset, unable to keep up with the commands. At any rate, the new machine is with them and going back to the factory. The only good news is the quality of service from my supplier and the fact I am getting a brand new machine as soon as the shops open up again after Christmas. mirgy |

| BACK ON LINE Hi, after LOTS of mucking around I finally got my laptop back. A huge thank you to the retailer who went out on a limb for me after Toshiba refused to find the error. Two different lots of techs couldn't work out the problem and only after Toshiba management got involved did they eventually admit to the problem that the screen did lock up. It was eventually tracked back to a bad 1Gb stick of ram that was faulting erratically. It was replaced and the system has not missed a beat since I have had it back. I am now a happy mirgy! |
