I just got this Portege with a dead HDD. I tried to replace it with a 20 GB 2.5" Fujitsu drive I had lying around, but that drive didn't fit because part of the drive mechanism overhangs the pins, but on the old toshiba drive the pins are completely exposed. So I have a few questions:

1. Do I have to buy a drive specifically made/sold for the 3505? I did some web searches and they're a bit pricier than regular drives. All the other 2.5" drives I own are already installed in laptops or MP3 players, and I don't want to start opening them up to examine them.

2. Has anyone tried installing a bootable OS on a hard drive using a different machine and then installing the default Toshiba stuff once you get the system running?

3. Has anyone tried booting to diskette and then loading drivers for a USB flash drive? Apparently these drivers are available here and there.

4. How can I get copies of the original Toshiba disks?

Its a pain in to try to get new disks and almost impossible in some cases since they dont make windows XP tablet PC edition anymore BUT i did find it on Ebay, a seller is selling a 20GB harddrive with windows already on it, just plug it in and go. and it really works because I have done it with that seller!!! $80 for the harddrive with the OS but worth it to avoid all of the headaches!!!
