For sometime I have been attempting to load XP on a new HDD on the Portege 3500.
I have tried various CD-Roms from the USB port and I have found one which can load start up files off the XP CD but will not go into setup Windows.
The XP boot floppies end with a screen of death.
The Ultimate Boot disk will get me to the DOS drives but will not copy the I386 files from CD to HDD through the Xcopy.T etc etc.
I tried to purchase a Toshiba 3246U-1DVD drive but they are scarce and expensive.
I was informed that I might be able to put the HDD in another LapTop, format in FAT32 then load the I386 files but, being somewhat inexperienced in DOS, I am uncertain as to specific steps I have to take.
I gave up for a couple of months and put the LapTop in a drawer.
Now I will try again but I need some advice as to clear and specific steps as to what to do.
Any help, any advice would be deeply appreciated.
