Portege 3500 tablet "dead zone"

I have a Portege 3500. It has developed a region on the screen where the pen will not track. It's almost like a column of the screen can't recognize the pen at all. On either side of this column, the pen seems to work flawlessly.

I have recently installed SP2, as well as a couple of other critical security updates. I tried looking for a new driver for the tablet, but wasn't sure exactly which one was needed.

TIA for any assistance.

I had exactly the same problem with my first 3500 tablet, and I'm afraid it's a hardware problem. There is an area of the screen where it simply loses the digitiser.

There is a solution, but be warned this will only get worse over time.

The solution is to place your thumbs on the screen at either end of the dead area and then apply pressure, squeezing the screen and moving your thumbs up and down (or left to right if you have a vertical dead zone). This will, with some perserverance, fix the problem. But, as I said, it gets worse over time and eventually needs an engineer's loving attention.
