Several companies like to use the term hybrid. Personally, I think this is redundant and confusing to a consumer.

(1) A convertible is a notebook that may be used in notebook mode or slate mode. The keyboard is hidden when the screen is rotated but the keyboard is always present.

(2) A slate is a pure tablet in which there is no converting into a notebook mode.

In other words, adding an attachable keyboard may be considered converting the slate or may be considered docking the slate or considering just using part of using the slate's optional equipment. I go with the last option because in the User's Guide, it states that the user must setup the unit with the attachable keyboard. Plus, a person cannot attach the keyboard of the TC1100 and walk around with it in that mode. Therefore, it is not a convertible. In contrast, I realize the User's Guide also includes the statement about being in notebook mode, thus adding to the confusion. More to feed this answer is that PC Magazine referes to the unit as a convertible design in their review.

This is why I ask if it is best to just refer to it as a slate.

So, do you go with hybrid when really it is a slate with an attachable keyboard? I don't know if there is a correct answer here. So, the classification is set to slate in this spreadsheet because that is the primary mode. There really is no "notebook" mode in the truest sense.

Anyone have a better way of classifying the Tablet PCs - so that there are distinct lines drawn?

in my opinion, since no other tablet PC has this same feature as TC1100, i think it is not fair to give it only a slate or convertibale design as the rest. and i would definitely take this as an advantage over the rest.

Please excuse the delay. I didn't realize until tonight that the fixes to the Tatung had not been made and the Motion M1400 was not included. Apparently I overwrote a file somewhere and will get things updated this weekend.

Great chart! Some minor suggestions:

- avoid split cells, so can sort by row in excel (e.g., by weight)

- toshiba offers a 2ghz model

- including prices would be great
