Instant On

It's been discussed many times but since the feature doesn't exist yet then we should keep talking about it

Instant On would be the perfect feature for a Tablet PC. According the article pubished on Reuters, "another concept that Microsoft said would soon become mainstream, the ability for computers to turn on and off nearly instantaneously."

Yes, we want it Now

Standby works pretty well for me

It's not quite instant but I have my Toshiba M205 set to go into standby mode when I close the lid or slide the power button. Using the Toshiba Energy Saver, I set the Tablet to go into Hibernation after an hour.

It takes about 15 seconds for the Tablet to wake up from Standby and reacquire the WiFi connection. This has been working really well for me.

Agree with Mochant

Dido, Mochant. My NEC Litepad takes about two seconds to return from standby and about 15 seconds to reacquire the wireless connection. I am glad the standby mode is something Microsoft fixed in this Windows version. I still have hibernation and hard drives shut down turned off. Standby is a great feature and preserves the battery life. A typical 2.5 hour charge can last me about 4.5 hrs when I use standby when taking a break or pausing between thoughts. It would be great if this could be adapted into an instant on/off feature ...it at leasts shows that Microsoft is headed in the right direction.

It does extend battery life nicely

That jibes with my experience. I regularly get 4.5-5 hours out of my M205 using this technique. If I get really aggressive or don't use WiFi, 6 hours is my best to date!

Cyberinmate: Could you please tell us what OS version you are running on your NEC Litepad? And I assume the Litepad is a tablet?
I am a big PDA user, and love the instant on option, and am looking at a way to bring to my home the power I need to drive a high res. screen and inteface to a wireless gateway, etc...

thanks, Rob.

IBM has been working on this type of RAM that is nonvolitile, meaning it doesn't wipe when you turn off the computer (reloading into ram is what boot up is for). If they ever get it right it will mean instant on even if you took the battery out and put it back in.
