| [Opinion]: The Market Explosion The computer industry is very unique. In fact, it is so unique that business majors who rely on old methods are generally left in the poorhouse while hotrods and people with spirit and the Protestant work ethic usually succeed and become wealthy. Yep, the good ole computer industry can leave you smilin or cryin. It's about taking a risk. So when anyone decides to become involvd on the retail end of the industry there is one important question, Are you a risk taker or a breaker? Your answer will guide you to your level of success. Let's take the original 286 Desktops. I used to offer these units for an average price of $2600 per box. The 386 box had a higher price point of just over $3,000. I was the least expensive retailer in the area and sold one to two units per day. None of these machines could handle MS Windows, so when memory became important then upgrades were the means to wealth. As prices dropped, I retreated to the cost of labor and relied on certifications. The Tablet PC industry is following the same patterns established years ago when the first PCs became available on the market. Innitially, price sensitive individuals were not important. The main factor in purchasing a unit was the capabilities. The sizzle was sold and not the steak. In other words, the potential of the computer. Do you know the potential of the Tablet PC? Then repeat it often. Reviewers have destroyed the computer market. They complained. They hissed. They said prices should drop. They told people when to purchase and when not to purchase. They controlled the market. Online reviewers and critics controlled purchasing too. For awhile at least. Actually, Tablet PCs are being controlled in this same fashion. Reviewers are saying that sales are down and the product will fail. They are trying to force the hand of manufacturers to give them products - or else. Ah, blackmail. But a realist will look at the market and understand that those days are over. Reviewers are meaningless crows. The market for Tablet PCs is set to explode. And here is the mixture. (1) Distributors have yet to be trained. They cannot answer even the simplest of questions about the Tablet PC. (2) Resellers have yet to be trained. They cannot answer even the simplest of questions about the Tablet PC. (3) Consumers are not aware of the product and its benefits. They cannot even begin to ask questions because they do not know where to begin. (4) Reviewers and critics are bad-mouthing the products. They have their own hidden agendas. Here is the scenario to break the mold. Let's start with number two and fix it immediately. Each visitor to this site should call up all of the resellers in their area or online and start asking about the Tablet PCs. Just ask questions. And ask again and again and again. Flood them with requests for information. Show them there is interest. Make the reseller follow up with answers to your questions by suggesting that they contact their contacts and get you answers. In turn, the reseller will go to the distributors and ask questions. The distributors will then be forced to ask the manufacturers questions. And they will ask for training in order to handle the requests for information. In turn, the manufacturers will invest more money into the form factor. We win
