| Toshiba Adds Wide Viewing Angle Technology Toshiba Adds Wide Viewing Angle Technology and 12.1-Inch SXGA+ Display to Line-Up of 'Kangaroo' LCD Modules for Tablet PCs 'Kangaroo' Display Family Enhanced With Anti-Color Inversion Technology to Extend Viewing Angle of New 12.1-inch SXGA+, and 12.1- and 10.1-inch XGA Modules SEATTLE, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* announced today at the Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition in Seattle, Washington, that it has added a higher resolution, 12.1-inch SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) thin film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) to its line of "Kangaroo" LCD modules for Tablet PCs. The new display features Anti-Color Inversion Technology (ACIT) to improve the range and symmetry of the viewing angle in both the upper/lower and left/right directions. New 12.1- and 10.4-inch XGA (1024x768) "Kangaroo" LCD modules with ACIT technology have also been developed and are now being offered. TAEC will exhibit the new 12.1-inch SXGA+ ACIT module at SID 2004. Developed by Toshiba Matsu****a Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD)**, the "Kangaroo" modules include a pocket behind the LCD panel in which system designers can easily insert a digitizer tablet, and are specifically designed to address the requirements of the Tablet PC market for thin, lightweight displays. TMD has been at the forefront in the development of leading-edge displays for the Tablet PC platform since its introduction in November 2002. The company's 10.4-inch and 12.1-inch XGA displays have been widely adopted by leading PC manufacturers in Tablet PC models to date. TMD's unique polysilicon technology enables a three-sides-free design that makes it particularly easy to insert the digitizer between the LCD panel and the backlight unit, without interference from PC boards from the left or right on the backside of the display. The new 12.1-inch SXGA+ ACIT module, designated LTD121KM2S, provides a higher-resolution, wider viewing angle version of TMD's special pocket LCD design for Tablet PCs in response to OEM demand. TMD's ACIT technology is designed to improve the range and symmetry of the viewing angle and address the reverse image region in conventional LCD panels that causes the image to appear black when viewed from too great an angle below the screen in normal notebook applications. In this display, the ACIT technology improves the upper/lower viewing angles to 45 degrees/50 degrees, and improves the left/right viewing angles to 50 degrees/50 degrees (as measured at a minimum contrast ratio of 10:1) providing a wide and symmetrical viewing angle. "As the leading LCD module supplier in the Tablet PC sector of the portable PC industry, we're working closely with our OEM customers to address the unique needs of this market," said Steve Vrablik, business development director for LCDs, for TAEC. "The addition of the 12.1-inch SXGA+ ACIT module and a full line-up of devices with ACIT wide viewing angle technology provide a wide selection of displays to our OEM customers for next-generation Tablet PCs." Pricing and Availability Samples of TAEC's 12.1-inch SXGA+ LTD121KM2S and 10.4-inch XGA LTD104KA3S with ACIT technology are available now, priced at $500 and $475 each, respectively, with full production scheduled for second quarter 2004. The 12.1-inch XGA LTM121KC5S module with ACIT technology is scheduled to sample in third quarter 2004. Contact TAEC for OEM pricing.
