City of Seattle auditing department buys tablet PCs

POWAY, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- City auditors in Seattle can throw away their red pens and lined notepads. The City of Seattle recently chose Gateway, Inc. to supply its auditing department with tablet PCs, allowing employees to write on-screen. The purchase is a follow-on to a larger deal announced several months ago, in which the City of Seattle standardized on Gateway technology for its 9,000 employees.

"Gateway's Tablet PC with wireless internet access has significantly improved our team's interaction," says Susan Cohen, city auditor. "In fact, the tablet's built-in voice recognition software has no trouble instantly translating my voice into text, which has especially helped one member of our team who is hearing impaired."

Auditors aren't the only officials benefiting from Gateway technology and service. From city hall to the public library system, Gateway's innovative desktop PCs, notebooks and tablets are helping the city better serve its citizens. In fact, Seattle standardized on Gateway because of the company's support for city conservation and recycling programs, its willingness to customize its technology solutions, and its openness in incorporating the city's feedback into future technology products and services.

To help Seattle with its conservation efforts, Gateway recently worked with officials to develop a reusable cart for equipment deliveries and storage. A unique storage unit that can hold up to 24 PCs, the cart eliminates the need for excessive packing materials and reduces the amount of cardboard, Styrofoam and plastic wrap in the city's waste system. The cart is easy to use and helps the City of Seattle's IT organization save valuable storage space. In addition, the cart will enable the city to deliver PCs back to Gateway as part of its asset recovery efforts when the city refreshes its systems every four years.

Just as Gateway worked with the city to develop the storage cart, the company also worked with government end-users during the development of Gateway's unique, all-in-one Gateway Profile(R) 5 PC. With a slim, compact design, the Gateway Profile 5 is perfect for space-constrained employees at front-office locations or with limited desk room. As early users of the Gateway Profile(R), Seattle employees provided feedback that led to the eventual development of multiple monitor size options (15-, 17- and 19-inch displays).

"Gateway responds to our specific needs, incorporating our feedback into
their products and services," says David Matthews, lead for the City of
Seattle's Desktop Commodities Team. "In turn, Gateway also plays a large role in our strategic planning, as the company goes to great lengths to keep us informed on its product roadmap."
