EDGE Goes Vertical With HP Rugged PCs

REDMOND, Wash., June 28 -- Two new HP-branded rugged PCs specifically designed to withstand the special conditions of industrial environments have completed network compatibility testing on the AT&T Wireless nationwide high-speed EDGE network, AT&T Wireless (NYSE: AWE) said today. The devices are components in the first EDGE-enabled, field service solution in the U.S.

The AT&T Wireless EDGE field service solution includes the HP Rugged Notebook nr3600 and the HP Rugged Tablet PC tr3000 and Dexterra(TM) Inc.'s Dexterra Field Service application for industries such as telecom, utilities, healthcare, manufacturing and transportation. The solution offers service management, real-time monitoring of service calls, service planning and scheduling, logistics management, up-sell and cross-sell capabilities, and financial processing in several industry-specific formats.

"The introduction of this industry-first, high-speed solution for field service organizations is a product of the 'EDGE ecosystem' that was formed late last year by AT&T Wireless and some of the leading communications and information technology companies in the world," noted Laura Johnson, director of industry solutions for AT&T Wireless. "Companies like HP, Intel, Dexterra and other ecosystem participants have joined AT&T Wireless in building a portfolio of EDGE-enabled solutions that will give companies and their employees mobile access to a much wider variety of mission-critical information than ever before through our nationwide high-speed data network."

HP's rugged PCs are designed to withstand long-term vibration, rain, dust and extreme operating temperatures. The HP Rugged Notebook nr3600 includes such features as a 1.7-gigahertz Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor, up to 1 gigabyte of memory, and ATI Mobility Radeon graphics controller with 32-bit color rendering and 3D graphics. The HP Rugged Tablet PC tr3000 includes a 933-megahertz ultra-low-voltage mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) III processor, support for up to 640 megabytes of low-voltage SDRAM, and integrated graphics capabilities including 3D rendering acceleration and 2D hardware acceleration.

"Field users demand rugged PCs that withstand challenging environmental conditions with reliable wireless access in order to work effectively in remote locations," said Ben Thacker, manager, Mobile Computing Global Business Unit at HP. "AT&T Wireless' high-speed network provides a simple and complete wireless solution that allows our customers to leverage the most value from their investment in our rugged products."

In addition, Intel and AT&T Wireless are working together to promote and sell AT&T Wireless' portfolio of advanced, wireless wide-area and local-area data solutions through the Intel Product Dealer Channel -- including this new field service solution. Intel's product dealer program represents one of the largest contingents of value added resellers in the United States that sell personal computers and consulting and networking services to small and medium-sized businesses.

"We are excited about the growth of mobile solutions designed specifically for vertical markets," said John McClure, director of communications and media sales and marketing at Intel Corporation. "AT&T Wireless' EDGE data network powered by Intel technology industry-standard notebooks from HP and innovative software from Dexterra is a great example of a value add data service for all mobile business users worldwide."

"This is a perfect example of the type of mobile solutions our enterprise customers have been expecting," according to Matthew Moore, Dexterra's vice president of partner development and marketing. "HP's ruggedized tablet devices accommodate the way people work in the field -- with a pen. The AT&T Wireless EDGE nationwide network provides unprecedented accessibility. The Dexterra Mobility Platform brings it all together, providing effective connectivity to enterprise systems and delivering this data to vertically-rich applications that enable users in the field.

"Most importantly," Moore said, "companies can adapt to changing needs without the effort of traditional mobile solutions. Together, HP, AT&T Wireless and Dexterra enable business to achieve on the promised value proposition of mobility."

AT&T Wireless EDGE service is available today to approximately 220 million people living and working in 7,500 cities and towns, and in areas along some 30,000 miles of interstate highways. With EDGE, mobile workers can access data at speeds averaging 100-130 Kbps with bursts up to 200 Kbps. For more information or to order, customers can call 866-4-AWS-B2B (866-429-7222).
