The tablet PC has taken as many brickbats as bouquets in its short history but, unlike the SmartDisplay, it shows a strong possibility of emerging a winner in the long run. The tablet PC offers relatively petite size and weight, virtually noiseless operation, snazzy wireless options, portability and versatility. Don't get us wrong, there are compromises to be made. You can't expect a tablet to be as fast as a Pentium 4 desktop, for example, but equally there are signs that the tablet is filling out in this respect.

The Centrino processor could be the shot in the arm that the tablet PC needs. Five from six tablets tested here feature the Pentium M processor, which shows how the relative punch it packs, coupled with low power consumption is perfectly suited to the format. The tablets we have on show here promise to be the most powerful to date and will give many portable notebooks a run for their money.
