Tablets Struggle for Position

One thing that Microsoft is very good at doing is testing and probing until it finds an opening. It then seizes market share one step at a time.

When Microsoft Corp. launched Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Microsoft Chief Software Architect Bill Gates declared the platform would change computing forever.

Gates may be proved correct eventually, but, two years later, Tablet PC sales remain disappointing, and tests of the forthcoming operating system update by eWEEK Labs don't indicate that horizontal usage will increase any time soon.

Hmm. I wonder whether this statement has merit. The assumption being that time will be the determining factor but so will negative press.

Let's look at this one idea for a second, how many people are waiting for SP2 to become final before purchasing?

Hopefully no one is waiting because the Service Pack will be a free upgrade. However, if the press speaks ill of the new TIP ideas then will this just kill sales?

I'm not sure.

In addition, in my opinion and many others that have used the SP2 Release candidate, the new features for the OS really do make using the Tablet PC just that much easier. I suspect that once the OS is released and loaded by the OEMs then we'll see if the statements in this article are valid.

This same author then writes another article:

The Tablet PCs have proved so successful among road warriors at Inspection Solution that company executives are now asking for the hardware, said Board. A number of managers use Microsoft's Journal within the Tablet PC operating system to take notes during meetings and then transfer those notes into Word documents, he said.

Microsoft Corp.'s Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005—the first major upgrade to the Tablet PC operating system—provides enough enhancements to entice some new converts. The update also will tide over current fans and developers until the release of a "Longhorn" version for Tablet PCs—or whatever Microsoft has planned for the Tablet operating system on the company's long and often-winding product road map.

eWEEK Labs' tests show that Tablet PC Edition 2005 dramatically improves on the initial release's handwriting-recognition capabilities and makes the overall Tablet PC experience more satisfying. However, enterprises evaluating Tablet PCs as possible notebook replacements should wait until Microsoft clarifies its plans for the operating system.

Ann is also the author of this eWeek article.

At first glance I thought these statements were opposite from the Tablet Struggles article. What do you think?
