| Fujitsu's Stylistic ST5020 THE Tablet PC has come a long way in a relatively short time. Earlier flirtations with this versatile offshoot of the notebook PC - the groundbreaking HP Compaq TC1000 comes to mind - offered tantalising hints of what was possible. A couple of years on, the promise is far closer to reality.
Fujitsu's Stylistic ST5020, introduced here just two months ago, is a notable case in point. Oozing class right out of the box, its sleek black and grey profile would look quite at home on the dashboard of a luxury car, and its 12.1-inch XGA TFT screen is brilliant. More importantly, the device is not just great to look at but great to work with.
And that's the key, really. The Tablet PC is, or should be, much more than a notebook. Its distinguishing feature, of course, is the digitised screen that you write on, just as you would on a paper notebook. But that's just the starting point. The 'paper notebook' metaphor reflects a philosophy of giving the user the experience of working the way he or she always has, but in turbo-charged, previously unimagined, ways made possible by technology.
