Post Tesco In-store Personal Shoppers to Use Tablet PCs to Pick Online Orders

Tesco, the United Kingdom's largest food retailer, is upgrading the order-picking and fulfilment processes of its online shopping arm with a wireless smart tablet in-store solution from mobile computing specialist Xperience.

In the multimillion-dollar deal, Xperience will equip 300 of Tesco's largest U.K. shops with at least 5,000 pre-imaged Xybernaut Atigo tablets. Alongside this, Xperience will provide on-site and off-site maintenance to the deployed panels, as well as a full support process.

Granted it will be for "personal shoppers" for now, it would be easy to implement tablet PCs for regular shoppers in the future.

Each transaction made on the Tesco.com Web site is logged on the company's central server farm, which then relays this information to the shop nearest to the postcode specified on the order's delivery address. Once an order has been downloaded to a shop's local server, it can then be split into logical picking groups.
I wonder the size of the server farm and whether it is easy to maintain.

I'm not familiar with Tesco in the UK, but if they're the largest food retailer over there, it has to be enormous. But I would assume it would be about like Wal-Mart doing something similar here in the states.

However, with Tesco going this route, consider the data warehousing and data mining they can work with. When you log in to the website, their farm can presumptuously fill my on-line shopping cart with milk, eggs or whatever because it knows when the last time was that I bought some, especially knowing the expiration dates of all of my food...which would be even further supplied via RFID tags.

I can't wait to finally see all of these technologies merge. That would truly "reinvent" the way we shop for groceries...or really shop for anything.
