The staff of four librarians in South Lyon, on the outskirts of Detroit, have two Acer TravelMate tablet PC's, linked to library and Internet resources through their Wi-Fi network. With the tablets in hand, they can wander the building and offer help to visitors, sometimes even before they are asked. .

"We call it roaming reference," said Holly Hibner, adult services librarian. "You can always tell when people have that frustrated look on their face. I can just say, 'Let me help you.' " -- The New York Times
