Tablet PC wins 1977 future design award

The title to this post was enchanting. Even though the person has less than positive things to say about the Tablet PC, it's a nice read. I do happen to disagree about typing versus handwriting.

How many people do you see using napkins at a dinner table as they sketch out their ideas? Right. You see this all of the time. You don't see them pulling out PDAs and sketching. No. You see pens and napkins.

Think of the Tablet PC as a big napkin. You can then make your own innovations.

And if you don't like the idea of using the pen for input then use it simply as a mouse replacement. It is much easier to scroll through a large document with a pen than a mouse.

Oh - by the way - 1977 was several years prior to the IBM desktop that sparked the computer industry in terms of the way it is today.

"I've been thinking about Tablet PCs since Scoble keeps evangelizing them with a fury that would make Guy Kawasaki proud. I'm convinced this is simply a Bill Gates ego project. It is an attempt to prove that his company can innovate. This has nothing to do with money. But I think Bill's missed the point. Nobody writes anymore, thanks in part to his own products. I mean really. Am I going to hack C++ code with a pen? Edit a massive document? No way. I've been typing for 15 years, and frankly I can hardly write anymore, and I see that as advancement. The percentage of the market that can't type is getting smaller not bigger. Why would I want to go backwards and use a less accurate input device? Ok it makes sense for a few vertical markets, but hipsters certainly don't want them like they want powerbooks. And Hipsters can smell innovation." -- Keep reading post
