| Tablet PC: Topping the Laptop It wasn't too many years ago that the laptop computer was being hailed as the savior of mobile professionals in the property/casualty insurance world. Claims adjusters and loss control pros merely had to head out into the field lugging their 7-pound-plus laptops and their jobs would become as easy as a few keystrokes.
Unfortunately, even with their widespread use, that scenario never really became reality. In spite of their portability, laptop users had to overcome other challenges. Their hinged covers made taking notes while moving around disaster scenes difficult. Another problem was their bulk. Even though some of today's models are in the 2- to 3-pound range, most powerful laptops fall into the 6- to 8-pound category.
Today, mobile claims jockeys have a new technological tool in the form of a hybrid, which claims to merge the benefits of the laptop, the voice recorder and old-fashioned pen and paper. They are known as tablet personal computers. Enthusiasts say the tablet PC's design and software applications give mobile claims adjusters a much better tool to get the job done.
